Ragin Cajun
is a centre cockpit Roberts Maritius. It has various custom modifications
to make it both a better and safer cruising boat. Notably it
has a rear sugar scoop and fixed stainless ladder which ensure
boat can be accessed from the water at any time. This is a great
safety feature.
The cockpit has been extended to allow
full length sleeping while on watch. Solid steel doghouse ensures
dry seating on both sides of the cockpit during rough conditions,
while two foot square hatch in front of doghouse
ensures wonderful flow through ventilation in warm conditions.
The custom long fin keel design has helped
directional stability particularly when sailing down wind. The
original rudder design has been modified by marine architects
so that the rudder shaft is now verticalised. The rudder shape
now closely follows the Bernoulli formula and the increased surface
area ensures that the rudder now very effectively steers the
boat, both at sea and in the tight confines of a marina. Ragin
Cajun has sailed tens of thousands of miles dead down wind on
only auto-pilot in the last seven years.
The rig has been designed so that down
wind sailing performance is enhanced. It consists of two 130%
Genoas on rollers at the front and a Yankee cut staysail forward
of the main mast. It has a standard slab reefed main and slab
reefed mizen. The masts are both designed to be able to be layed
down using a block and tackle and frames carried aboard single
handily. This is so that the boat can be driven through the canals
under the bridges in Europe. The less than two metre draft fin
keel also is helpful in the shallow canals.
The sail set up for dead down wind is very
simple. Pole out a Genoa at either side of centre, strap the
staysail dead amidships tight, strap a triple reefed main dead
amidships tight and set the auto pilot and away you
go. Because the rudder is at the very rear of the boat, and the
drive is coming from the two Genoas at the very front of the
boat she is being pulled by the nose, and therefore keeps a straight
line. The purpose of the
staysail and the mainsail strapped to centre is to act as flopper
stoppers and to stop the boat rolling from side to side. In the
Pacific, we have actually left cups of coffee sitting on the
table sailing down wind like this.
The engine is the ever reliable 80hp 4236
Perkins which was in all 65hp Massey Ferguson red tractors and
early bob cats and many gensets. The transmission is a Borg-Warner
velvet drive, driving an 1 3/4" shaft and 19" fixed
three blade bronze prop.
A Muir windlass pulls up the anchor which
is a 70kg Bugel. The forward chain box has 100m of 12mm chain.
The after locker has 60m of 12mm chain with two 45lb CQRs. The
boat is also equipped with two 45lb Fishermans in case of cyclone.

Ragin Cajun
is being reluctantly sold because of an urgent health concern
of the owner. The intention was to spend two years in Darwin
and head off round the world again. Unfortunately not to be.
Obviously the new owner will be supplied
with a detailed list of what will be necessary to have this robust
cruising boat ready to circumnavigate again. We love her as she
has been our home for the last twelve years and will be sad to
let her go.
Forced Sale. $40K
